📖 How Percentage Calculator Works

A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred." Percentages are used everywhere — in discounts, exam scores, GST, interest rates, salary hikes, and data analysis.

Our calculator handles three common types of percentage problems: finding a percentage of a number, finding what percentage one number is of another, and calculating percentage change (increase or decrease).

🔢 Three Key Percentage Formulas

Type 1 — % of a Number Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number Example: 20% of 500 → (20 ÷ 100) × 500 = 100
Type 2 — What % is X of Y? Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100 Example: 45 out of 60 → (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%
Type 3 — Percentage Change Change % = [(New − Old) ÷ Old] × 100 Positive = Increase | Negative = Decrease

🧮 Worked Example

📌 Real Life Example: Salary Hike

Old salary: ₹40,000 | New salary: ₹46,000

Percentage Increase = [(46,000 − 40,000) ÷ 40,000] × 100

= [6,000 ÷ 40,000] × 100 = 15% salary hike

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Percentage of marks = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. Example: Scored 450 out of 600 → (450 ÷ 600) × 100 = 75%.

Discount Amount = (Discount% ÷ 100) × Original Price. Example: 30% off on ₹2,000 MRP → (30 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = ₹600 discount → Final price = ₹1,400.

If the new value is higher than the old value, it is a percentage increase. If lower, it is a percentage decrease. Formula is the same: [(New − Old) ÷ Old] × 100. A negative result = decrease.

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is applied as a percentage on the base price. For example, if GST rate is 18%, the tax on a ₹1,000 product = 18% of ₹1,000 = ₹180, so you pay ₹1,180. Use our GST Calculator for accurate GST splits.
